During a savage Viking raid, Abbot Blathmac is murdered on the steps of his monastery for refusing to reveal the hiding place of St Columba’s sacred relics.

The next morning, one Viking wakes alone, hungover, abandoned by his crew and stripped of his sword by the island’s last surviving monk. He cannot swim, there are no boats, and the relics he came to steal remain hidden. With only his wits, he must survive long enough to rejoin his comrades — and uncover the treasure that brought him to Iona in the first place.

Rooted in real history and the early monastic culture of Iona, this novella is a thrilling, darkly comic and deeply thoughtful exploration of the clash between Christianity and paganism. Celtic Sea Stories brings together myths and legends from the past, which the author has collected throughout his lifetime, along with others written specifically for the collection, to provide an enchanting vision of Scottish life by the sea. From kings and fairies to mermaids and witches every tale explores a different aspect of a forgotten way of life. Before schools and television storytelling was the only way to entertain, impart wisdom and explain the inexplicable. Celtic Sea Stories allows readers to share in the storytelling experience again and again, while learning about Scottish history and culture.

Why You'll Love This Ebook

Compelling stories rooted in Celtic maritime tradition.

Adventure, history, and cultural connection to the sea.

Published by Luath Press, Scotland's leading independent publisher.

A voyage through Celtic waters and storytelling heritage.

About the Author

George W. The River Clyde links west of Scotland communities shaped by a potent mix of Red Clydeside radicalism and Green and Orange religious loyalties. Ian R. Mitchell takes you on a journey along the River Clyde and shows it's not just about the remnants of shipbuilding, relating stories of conflicts, people and communities. The river rolls from Lanarkshire, once renowned for its coal and steel production, to former centres of textile production such as Paisley and the Vale of Leven, with many other places equally rich in industrial history along its 100 mile course. From Robert Owen's New Lanark utopian experiment to the Little Moscow of the Vale of Leven, here is a working-class history rich in political and industrial innovation.

Why You'll Love This Ebook

The Clyde's transformation from industrial powerhouse to cultural hub.

Stories of community, work, and resilience.

Published by Luath Press, Scotland's leading independent publisher.

A tribute to Clydeside's enduring spirit.

About the Author

IAN R MITCHELL is a historian, who gave up teaching to devote himself to writing full time. Their unique ecosystems support a huge range of marine and other wildlife: human activity too is profoundly influenced by their waters and shores. The Solway Firth – the crooked finger of water that both unites and divides Scotland and England – is a beautiful yet unpredictable place and one of the least-industrialised natural large estuaries in Europe. Its history, geology and turbulent character have long affected the way its inhabitants, both human and non-human, have learnt to live along and within its ever-changing margins.

Why You'll Love This Ebook

Discover the unique ecology of one of Britain's most distinctive estuaries

Learn how fresh and salt waters create extraordinary wildlife habitats

Explore the human and natural histories of the Solway shore

Read another celebrated title from Birlinn Ltd - Independent Scottish Publisher

Reviews

'Deep and beautiful natural history writing — Lingard's scientific knowledge of the area and its multitudinous inhabitants delivered in riveting prose' BBC Countryfile Magazine

'Like a hungry gull, Ann Lingard explores her beloved Solway shoreline for every living detail. She had never heard of Soay before, let alone visited it, but something inexplicable drew her there. Within ten minutes of stepping off the said fishing boat, she had fallen under the spell of the island, and after a few months she moved there to live. She is still there. When she arrived on the remote west coast island there were only 17 inhabitants, among them the legendary Hebridean sharker Tex Geddes and his family. Today, including Anne and her husband Robert, there are only three. This book describes her extraordinary transition from a hectic urban lifestyle to one of rural isolation and self-sufficiency, without mains electricity, medical services, shops or any of the other modern amenities we take for granted. Anne describes the history of Soay and its unique wildlife, and as well as telling her own personal story introduces along the way some of the off-beat and colourful characters associated with the island, notably Tex's one-time associate, the celebrated writer and naturalist, Gavin Maxwell.

Why You'll Love This Ebook

Discover what it really means to live on one of Scotland's remotest islands

Read an honest, warm memoir of family life off the grid

Explore the practical realities and quiet beauty of island living

Read another celebrated title from Birlinn Ltd - Independent Scottish Publisher

Reviews

'A remarkable tale of remote living — a vivid, quietly gripping account of life on one of Scotland's most isolated islands.' Sunday Post

'A lovely, gentle tale of a woman adjusting to a new life that proves anything but dull; it will stir the adventurer in all of us.' Fleetwood Weekly News

'A subtle and convincing book, its plainness of observation exemplary — a portrait built from tiny glimpses, tone‑changes and moments of quiet revelation.' The National

About the Author

Anne Cholawo was born and brought up in Luton. At the mid-way stop in South Georgia, her pristine image of the Antarctic was shattered when she discovered the dark legacy of twentieth century industrial-scale whaling. Enraged by what she found, she was quick to blame the men who undertook this wholescale slaughter, but then she stumbled upon the grave of an eighteen-year-old whaler from Edinburgh who she could not allow to bear the brunt of blame. There are two sides to every story.

The Two-Headed Whale vividly brings to life the spectacular scenery and wildlife of the vast Southern Oceans, set alongside the true-life story of Anthony Ford, the boy in the grave, as he sailed the same seas and toiled in an industry where profits outranked human life.

In this compelling account, Sandy challenges our preconceptions of the Antarctic, weaving in themes of colonialism, capitalism and its link to both environmental and human exploitation. Drawing together threads of nature and travel writing with an unflinching narrative of life onboard a whaling factory ship and the legacy it left behind, The Two-Headed Whale leaves us questioning our troubled relationship with the extraordinary abundance of this planet.

Why You'll Love This Ebook

Experience a genuine mystery that fascinated Victorian naturalists and scientists

Explore Scotland's rich marine biodiversity and natural history

Discover how curiosity and observation reveal nature's secrets

Read another celebrated title from Birlinn Ltd - Independent Scottish Publisher

'A triumph of research — a moving and compassionate eulogy for a young man who, without Winterbottom, would have remained anonymous and unremembered' The Herald

'A majestic look at the barbaric heyday of commercial whaling in the Antarctic Ocean and the lingering consequences for its practitioners and the planet' The Boston Globe

'Compassionate and clear sighted, The Two-Headed Whale brings vividly to life a little-known part of the world, and a little-known part of British history' Malachy Tallack

'A poised, clear-eyed and nuanced exploration of large themes — the writing is affecting and will endure' Kevin MacNeil

'A fascinating blend of fact, fiction, memoir and travel writing that defies categorisation' The People's Friend

About the Author

Sandy Winterbottom spent most of her career as an academic teaching and researching in the Environmental Sciences at Stirling University. And over a long career in the Metropolitan Police he served on 6 Divisions as well as in specialised squads (regional crime squad, flying squad, stolen car squad, central drug squad as well as several murder squads), which gave him an intimate and unrivalled knowledge of the murkier aspects of London life. In 1977 he was involved in Operation Ohio as the police dealt with a major and vicious spate of armed robbery in the Midlands and south of England. Since returning to Lewis he has maintained a high profile, both for his charity work (he has raised money for Leukaemia research and the Anthony Nolan Trust) as well as more controversial things, such as serving alcohol in his pub on Sundays and campaigning for Sunday flights and ferries.

All this, and much more, is covered in this witty and amusing memoir which is bound to appeal to Hebrideans both at home and abroad, as well those with an interest in true crime and all readers who appreciate the story of those with a remarkable zest for life.

Why You'll Love This Ebook

Follow one of the most unlikely careers in Scottish criminal history

Discover the colourful life of Jock Murray, from Arctic ice to London streets

Explore an adventure story that reads like fiction but is entirely true

Read another celebrated title from Birlinn Ltd - Independent Scottish Publisher

About the Author

Jock Murray was born in Lewis in 1940, and returned there after his retirement from the Metropolitan police.

Publication Details

Publisher: Birlinn Ltd

Publication Date: 01 November 2011

Print Length: 230 pages (Ebook edition)

ISBN (Ebook): 9780857900876

Format: Ebook

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access my ebook?

Download The Grey Hill App and log in using the same email you used at checkout. During both World Wars, the Royal Navy made Scapa the home for its capital ships, and thousands of servicemen and women were posted to Orkney. From here the Grand Fleet sailed for Jutland in 1916, from here the escorts for the Russian convoys set off, and it was in this beautiful, bleak anchorage that the German High Seas fleet committed the greatest act of suicide ever seen at sea – 'The Grand Scuttle' – before being later raised and scrapped in the most astonishing feat of maritime salvage in history. It was also in Scapa that the last photographs of Kitchener were taken as he boarded HMS Hampshire, shortly before she was sunk by mine off Marwick Head.

Scapa is also the grave of many who fought for their country in both World Wars. In its silent waters lie the wrecks of the battleship Vanguard, blown apart by an explosion in 1917, and the Royal Oak, sunk by U-47 in a spectacular raid at the beginning of World War II . It was to turn into one of the most breathtaking survival stories of all time. Even as they coasted down the channel, Shackleton wired back to London to offer his ship to the war effort. The reply came from the First Lord of the Admiralty, one Winston Churchill: "Proceed." And proceed they did. When the Endurance was trapped and finally crushed to splinters by pack ice in late 1915, they drifted on an ice floe for five months, before getting to open sea and launching three tiny boats as far as the inhospitable, storm-lashed Elephant Island. They drank seal oil and ate baby albatross (delicious, apparently).

From there Shackelton himself and seven others - the author among them - went on, in a 22-foot open boat, for an unbelievable 800 miles, through the Antarctic seas in winter, to South Georgia and rescue. It is an extraordinary story of courage and even good-humour among men who must have felt certain, secretly, that they were going to die.

Worsley's account, first published in 1940, captures that bulldog spirit exactly: uncomplaining, tough, competent, modest and deeply loyal. Concentrating mainly on the legendary golden age of pirates - 1690 to 1710 - when pirate vessels not only menaced the waters of the East and West Indies, but even threatened the northern islands of Scotland. During this time, many Scots left hard lives in places like Aberdeen, Stornoway and Orkney to find fame, fortune and adventure on the dangerous high seas of more exotic locations like Madagascar, Brazil or the Caribbean.

Some, like Captain James Macrae from Ayr, became well-respected pirate hunters, champions of the law upon the ocean, bravely facing violent battles and unsavoury characters. Others, such as John Gow from Orkney, were these unsavoury characters, their dastardly deeds capturing the imagination of the Scottish public. This morbid fascination is reflected in the work of Scottish writers like Daniel Defoe and Robert Louis Stevenson, with novels such as Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island, among others, cementing the glamour and notoriety of the pirate in the public mind.

Gripping, entertaining and informative, Seawolves shows a different, darker side to the famously enterprising Scot. Graham explores all these elements of Scotland's participation in piracy and provides a fascinating and enlightening account of the lifestyle of those who followed the skull and crossbones, often to their death on the gallows.

Why You'll Love This Ebook

Discover Scotland's surprising and largely hidden involvement in the golden age of piracy

Meet the Scots buccaneers, privateers, and merchant adventurers of the high seas

Explore maritime history at its most colourful, dangerous, and compelling

Read another celebrated title from Birlinn Ltd - Independent Scottish Publisher

Reviews

'A gripping insight into many Scots who ventured forth in a trade harsher than fiction but no less colourful' Scots Magazine

About the Author

Eric Graham is a historical researcher and writer. The whale became an instant celebrity, known simply as the Monster, but a handful of boats were launched to try and catch it. The hunt was farcical, protracted, and ultimately grotesque - the whale remained elusive for four weeks before towing six vessels out past the Bell Rock lighthouse. All the lines parted in building seas and the whale escaped, but it was mortally wounded and was found floating off Stonehaven on January 6, bristling with ironmongery.

After a public auction was held for the corpse, the whale was hauled to Dundee. The public was charged sixpence or a shilling to see it, special trains were run from all over Angus, Perthshire and Fife, and for three shillings they could have their photograph taken sitting at a table inside the whale's propped open mouth.

The whale was immortalised by the poetry of William McGonagall and went on tour by train on a specially built cradle to Aberdeen, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, London and Edinburgh, before returning to Dundee. Its skeleton was presented to Dundee Museum, despite lucrative offers from big museums in London, Europe and America. The Winter Whale is a remarkable historical set piece, a product of its time, although even then public opinion was divided between glee and outrage, pro-whaler and pro-whale.

Why You'll Love This Ebook

Experience nature writing of rare lyrical beauty and observational skill

Discover the secret lives of whales in Scottish coastal waters

Explore a season of wild encounters from one of Scotland's finest nature writers

Read another celebrated title from Birlinn Ltd - Independent Scottish Publisher

About the Author

Jim Crumley was born and grew up in Dundee, and now lives in Stirlingshire. Time and time again listeners enthralled by Duncan Williamson's lore would ask him for the silkie tale. Duncan grew up with the seals, slept nights stranded by the tide in their colonies, heard countless stories from crofters, fishermen and travellers alike about the strange people who were related to the seal; the silkie stories magically link the two worlds, animal and human, sea and land.

This new and expanded edition contains twenty-four stories, including thirteen that are previously unpublished, with a new introduction by Linda Williamson which examines the background of the West Highland belief in the seal people. For the next six years it occupied the boatyard of yacht builder William Fife on the Firth of Clyde. During this time, highly confidential world-leading research on the acoustic detection of submarines by asdic – now known as sonar – was carried out by hundreds of scientists, officers and local men and women based at Fairlie. As experiments took place into new ways of sinking German U-boats, the peace of the quiet village was shattered. Winston Churchill described the work done at Fairlie as critical to winning the Battle of the Atlantic and ultimately the war. The research remained relevant to anti-submarine warfare long after the war, and is still relevant today.

Fairlie's role in the war was not disclosed until relatively recently. A wonderfully benevolent, and eccentric character, his passion and love for the island and its continuing success, has always been of the utmost importance. He has kept diaries all his life and delves deep into them, unveiling a uniquely human story, punctuated with liberal amounts of humour, as well as heart-rending tragedy, always dominated by the vagaries of the sea.

Here are tales of coal puffers and livestock transportation on steamers and small boats, extraordinary chance meetings and adventures that eventually led him to finding his wife Jenny, on the island of Soay. Two friends decided to find out...

Over a boozy Sunday lunch, flatmates James Adair and Ben Stenning made a promise to row across an ocean despite having no sailing or rowing experience whatsoever. This is an account of their 116 days at sea as they undertook the voyage of a lifetime. From eerie calms to their capsize in stormy seas, their determination and perseverance pushed them through the relentless dangers of rowing and sleeping under sun, moon, wind and stars for day upon day. Their tale is one of moonbows and meteor showers, passing whales and thieving fish, lurking sharks and giant squid ... and a terrifying fight for survival.

Why You'll Love This Ebook

116 days at sea: moonbows, meteor showers, sharks, giant squid and one terrifying capsize

A completely honest account of two amateurs in way over their heads

Over 1,500 miles from the nearest land with nothing but oars

Read another celebrated title from Polygon - an imprint of Birlinn Ltd

About the Author

James Adair read Modern History at the University of St Andrews.
