The Grey Hill is a platform for independent authors, actors, and publishers to connect, create audio theatre content, and share their work with our theatre partners and audiences. We take pride in establishing a company that promotes accessibility and new income opportunities for those in the theatre industry. We owe our success to the passionate individuals pursuing their dreams, so we will be highlighting their stories in the coming weeks. Our first feature is on actor Sarah C. Meikle.

How did you become an Audio Theatre Artist?

While in lockdown, I was invited to participate in several podcasts, and my agency suggested that us actors collaborate to produce some audio dramas since this could be accomplished remotely while we were all feeling bored and confined at home. Fortunately, my partner, who has a passion for music, assisted me in obtaining the appropriate microphone and setting so that I could perform well.

How did working with The Grey Hill help build your career in Audio?

This experience has been incredibly beneficial for me, as it has allowed me to gain more expertise and connect with new writers and individuals in the industry. Additionally, I thoroughly enjoyed portraying a wide range of characters and experimenting with various voice styles and accents!

You took part in Stories from The Grey Hill; what attracted you to this project?

I wanted to enhance my experience in audio drama, and taking part in Stories from The Grey Hill was the perfect place to gain knowledge and expand my skill sets.

Pure Baltic by Birgit Itsie

Do you have a favourite character / or play? If so, why?

I really enjoyed my character in Pure Baltic as that piece is very relaxing. I also enjoyed tackling a bit of Scots in Ash Lagoon.

Who was most instrumental in getting your career going (besides you)?

I have to say my immediate family and my fiancé are extremely supportive and that has been the biggest help to be honest. I'm very lucky to have the support and freedom to be able to pursue a career in the arts.

What is the most important thing you have learned about the industry (theatre/audio theatre) since getting started?

I've learned that you really just have to keep pushing, keep investing in yourself and just audition as much as you can. Unfortunately nothing is guaranteed so even getting to audition is a win in my book!

Do you have any particular habits while you record? – What is your process?

Creating a relaxing environment is important for me - I always have a cup of tea nearby!

What's your most essential piece of studio gear?

I really think a good mic is essential as there's no point giving an amazing performance if it can't be heard or sounds bad.

What excites you about Audio Theatre?

It offers a unique theatrical experience that is inclusive to a wide audience, which I find very positive. I particularly appreciate the opportunity to fully engage and unleash my imagination while listening.

What's your favourite Audio theatre play?

I'll probably stick with Pure Baltic at the moment because I love something with a relaxing soundscape, it almost becomes meditative to listen to.

If you could be in any production, what would it be and what character would you play?

I'd love to do more Shakespeare! Any of those leading ladies would be a dream role or something dark like the Woman in Black or Rebecca would be fun!

What do you aspire to do next?

I would like to do more theatre performances on larger stages and also expand my television work, with a particular interest in opportunities with BBC Scotland.
