Your theatre, beyond the building
The Grey Hill partners with theatres, producers and arts organisations to bring their work to digital audiences through audio theatre, ebooks, digital events and content that travels beyond the stage.
Start with the production you already have, whether that is a reading, a live capture or a studio version.
A digital storefront and app built for theatre audiences, not adapted from retail.
Transparent royalties, tracked sales, and revenue attributed back to your organisation.
Theatre, designed to be heard
Audio theatre is theatre experienced through sound. In the simplest terms, it is the equivalent of a radio play performed in a theatre setting.
A production might be a script-in-hand performance recorded in front of an audience, a rehearsed reading with music and sound design, a live capture of an existing production, or a specially produced audio version of a stage work. The approach scales to suit the production, venue and budget.
Many organisations begin with a script-in-hand performance or a live capture, so you can test audience appetite for audio without building a separate production from scratch. The same creative work can then exist in several formats:
Audio theatre through The Grey Hill operates within established industry frameworks, informed by discussions with Equity and recognised industry good practice, so writers, performers, producers and venues share in success. New to audio theatre? We support budgeting, planning, production workflows and first-time delivery.
You make the work. We help it reach audiences and earn income beyond the live performance.
A performance reaches the people in the room. An audio production can continue reaching audiences long after the final curtain call. Productions are captured under established Audio Theatre agreements and distributed through a platform built for theatre audiences.
Why organisations work with The Grey Hill
Earn from work you've already created
Your production has already been commissioned, rehearsed, marketed and performed. Recording creates a new digital version that generates ongoing revenue.
Reach audiences beyond the venue
Audio lets audiences across Scotland, the UK and internationally experience the work, including people facing geographic, financial or accessibility barriers.
Extend the life of a production
Most theatre disappears when the run ends. Audio helps you keep building audiences, supporting artists and showcasing new work.
Maintain ownership
The rights stay with you. We distribute your production and share revenue; ownership of the recording and underlying rights remains with the producing organisation.
Join a growing network
Sell through the store and app, connect releases to ticket sales, promote through partner venues, and be found by audiences looking for theatre.
The question isn't whether your work deserves a wider audience.
It's whether you'd like that audience to stop at the theatre door.
You'd be in good company
Why would an arts organisation need a store?
You're not here to run a shop. You're here to create productions, develop artists and engage audiences. The store exists because most arts organisations already create valuable digital assets, but few have a distribution model designed around how theatre actually works.
Unlike major digital platforms, our model links revenue directly to theatres and producing partners. Every partner receives unique tracking links and promotional codes, so every sale can be traced back to the organisation that generated the audience, with agreed revenue shares paid after publisher royalties and platform costs.
The store also wasn't adapted from a generic ecommerce platform. It was developed for the commercial and creative realities of the arts sector, so more value flows back to creators, producers and organisations.
Example: The Price of a Fish Supper by Catherine Czerkawska. One play, sold three ways after the performance.
Each can be sold individually, offered as a bundle, or attached to a live performance through a unique code or link, with revenue attributed back to the producing organisation.

Notes from The Grey Hill
Conversations, practical guidance and the thinking behind our audio theatre model as it develops, including how audio theatre and the store fit together as one model for the sector.
Built with the sector, not for the sector
The Grey Hill's audio theatre model has been informed by participation in the CoSTAR programme, support through ITC membership, discussions with Equity, guidance from the Writers' Guild, feedback from literary agents, and conversations with AudioUK.
The result is a model designed around how theatre actually works:
Supported by the CoSTAR programme and developed in collaboration with partners across the UK creative industries.
