About the Ebook
In post‑war Glasgow, a primary school class is asked to write about a memorable family event. Every child completes the assignment — except one.
Why didn’t you write about your family?
Please, miss. I didn’t… I didn’t know what to write.
Now, decades later, he does.
Already, Too Late is Carl MacDougall’s searingly honest memoir of his early years — from Fife to Springburn to a care home in East Kilbride. It is a world on the edge of living memory: a single‑parent household of German descent, where money is scarce, trauma is constant and tragedy arrives again and again.
Through a mosaic of vivid, unsentimental stories, MacDougall reveals a childhood marked by heartbreak, dissociation and loss. This is the story of an outsider looking in — a changeling child, displaced, alone, and, in his grandmother’s words, “no right”.
For some, even the beginning is already too late.
