About the Ebook

Ayr Stories – A Journey Through the Auld Toon

Ayr, a Royal Burgh since 1205, is one of Scotland’s oldest and most historically significant towns. Its long and turbulent past has produced a wealth of dramatic, surprising, and often extraordinary stories. From war and occupation to uprisings, executions, and unforgettable local characters, Ayr’s history is as colourful as it is compelling.

This unique collection gathers twenty‑six stories — ancient and modern — that reveal the town’s rich heritage. Discover William Wallace’s battles on Ayr’s streets, Oliver Cromwell’s occupation, the witch burnings, the history of the Low Green, and the murder of Sir Thomas Kennedy of Culzean. Explore the great Ayr Bank crash, the much‑loved Ayr trams, Ayr’s role in the sport of kings, the Popplewells and the Gaiety Theatre, Ayr United FC, the Ross murder, and the wrongful imprisonment of Paddy Meehan.

A captivating collection for anyone with an interest in Ayrshire, Scottish history, or the stories that shape a community.
