About the Ebook
Brave New Music: The Martyn Bennett Story is the first full biography of one of Scotland’s most groundbreaking and influential musicians. Piper, violinist, composer, producer, DJ — Martyn Bennett defied categorisation, blending folk tradition with classical training, global influences and the raw energy of the dance‑club scene.
His radical sound — championed by Peter Gabriel and folklorist Hamish Henderson — fused ancient voices with modern beats, creating a musical language that was entirely his own. Henderson famously called it “brave new music”, and its impact continues to echo across Scotland and beyond.
Gary West traces Bennett’s extraordinary life: his deep roots in Scottish culture, his artistic daring, his mischievous humour, and his remarkable resilience in the face of serious illness. Twice diagnosed with unrelated cancers, Bennett fought through adversity to create some of the most iconic and influential music of his generation.
He died in 2005 at just 33 — but his legacy endures. His work still fills concert halls, inspires new artists, and shapes the sound of contemporary folk and electronic music worldwide.
