About the Ebook
To This Northern Shore – Pieces of a Life from South to North
From a small Scottish seaside town, Jean‑Luc Barbanneau looks back on a remarkable life shaped by displacement, reinvention, and the search for belonging. Born in Algiers during the final, violent years of French colonial rule, he writes with clarity and honesty about what it meant to grow up as a pied‑noir — exiled from Algeria, unwelcome in France, and forever marked by a childhood lived in the shadow of war.
His journey continues through provincial France and Paris, where he witnessed and participated in the May 1968 protests that shook the foundations of French society. Later, he moved to England, eventually making it his home for nearly fifty years. Falling in love with British culture, he chose to become a British citizen, gaining a unique vantage point from which to observe — and challenge — the myths and misunderstandings that shape the relationship between Britain and France.
His career spans teaching, decades in book publishing from editor to director, and later work in digital content — with life‑affirming experiences as a volunteer psychotherapist along the way. Following Brexit, he made a final move to Scotland, drawn by its openness, its cultural spirit, and its hopeful vision of reconnecting with Europe.
This memoir is rich with coming‑of‑age stories, humour, travel adventures across West Africa, and reflections on food, wine, music, friendship, resilience, and the art of living fully.
Told with verve, lucidity, and an elegiac beauty, To This Northern Shore is a deeply human story of exile, identity, and the long journey toward home.

About the Author
Jean‑Luc Barbanneau – Editor, Teacher, Traveller, Memoirist
Jean‑Luc Barbanneau was born in 1949 in Algiers to a family of French, Italian, and Spanish descent — a heritage typical of the minority European population in colonial Algeria. His childhood coincided with the Algerian War of Independence, the outcome of which forced his family into exile in France.
He completed his schooling in Niort before attending university in Paris, where he became involved in the events of May 1968. After moving to the UK, he gained British citizenship in 1976 and embarked on a long career in publishing in London and Oxford, following an early period teaching in Brighton.
He now lives on the east coast of Scotland, near Edinburgh, continuing to write and reflect on a life lived across borders, cultures, and histories.
