About the Ebook
Burnscripts brings together a remarkable collection of dramatic interpretations by John Cairney — the actor, writer and performer whose name has become synonymous with Robert Burns.
Cairney’s connection to Burns spans nearly half a century. Having performed as the poet across the world, he developed an unparalleled understanding of Burns’ life, work and emotional landscape. These scripts reflect that lifetime of immersion, offering a unique and intimate perspective on Scotland’s national bard.
Through performance, scholarship and personal insight, Cairney explores Burns’ passions, contradictions, humour and humanity. The result is a vivid, theatrical portrait that deepens our understanding of one of Scotland’s most important cultural icons.
As Cairney himself writes: “Given the brevity of his life, it is extraordinary not that he wrote so much, but that so much of it was good.”

About the Author
John Cairney is one of Scotland’s most distinguished actors, writers and performers. After training at the RSAMD, he built a celebrated stage career including roles at the Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre, Bristol Old Vic and the Edinburgh Festival.
His association with Robert Burns began in 1965 with Tom Wright’s solo play There Was A Man, which he performed in Edinburgh and London, later televised nationally and recorded for REL Records. From that point, Cairney became internationally recognised as the definitive interpreter of Burns.
Across his career he performed solo shows on Burns, William McGonagall, Robert Service and Robert Louis Stevenson, touring worldwide for the British Council, P&O Cruises and major festivals. He also wrote extensively — publishing biographies, novels, essays and works on theatre and Scottish culture.
Beyond acting and writing, Cairney was also an accomplished painter, exhibiting in Scotland and New Zealand. He held an M.Litt from the University of Glasgow and a PhD from Victoria University, Wellington, and served as Honorary President of the Robert Burns Worldwide Federation.
