About the Ebook

Calum’s Road tells the astonishing true story of Calum MacLeod, the last resident of northern Raasay, who refused to let his community die. Born in 1911, Calum tended the Rona lighthouse until semi‑automation in 1967 reduced his duties. With the north end of the island emptying and no road connecting Arnish to the rest of Raasay, he decided to act.

At the age of 56, armed with little more than hand tools, determination and a belief that the land deserved a future, Calum set out to build the “impossible” road himself. Working alone during his months off, he carved a perfectly engineered track across unforgiving terrain — complete with flawless gradients, culverts and supporting walls.

The project became a twenty‑year labour of love: part engineering feat, part artistic creation, part act of devotion to a disappearing community. Roger Hutchinson’s account is both moving and inspiring, capturing the quiet heroism of a man who refused to give up on his home.

“An incredible testament to one man’s determination.”
— The Sunday Herald
