About the Ebook
The Horizontal Oak is an intimate, courageous and uplifting memoir from wildlife expert, journalist and photographer Polly Pullar. Her lifelong bond with animals began early — at seven years old, her pet sheep Lulu accompanied her to school, setting the tone for a life lived close to nature.
Growing up in a remote corner of the West Highlands, Polly roamed freely through wild landscapes, encountering otters, seals, eagles and wildcats. But beneath the beauty lay family secrets and emotional turmoil. Her idyllic childhood was overshadowed by her father’s alcoholism and eventual suicide, the breakdown of her relationship with her mother, and later the collapse of her own marriage.
Through these hardships, nature became her refuge and her teacher. As Polly rebuilt her life, she forged a remarkable career rehabilitating wildlife, writing about the natural world and photographing its wonders. With compassion, humour and optimism, she reflects on how the creatures and landscapes she loves helped her find forgiveness, understanding and balance.
“Peppered with humour, empathy and kindness.”
