About the Ebook

The Thirty‑Nine Steps introduces Richard Hannay, recently returned from South Africa and already bored with London life. Everything changes when an American stranger bursts into his flat with a warning of an assassination plot — and is murdered soon after, leaving Hannay the prime suspect.

Forced to flee both the police and a shadowy network of spies, Hannay escapes north to Scotland, where he must rely on his wits, courage and instinct to stay alive long enough to warn the government of the conspiracy unfolding around him.

First published in 1915, this classic spy thriller sold over a million copies before Buchan’s death in 1940 and has inspired countless adaptations for film, television and stage. Its breathless pacing, vivid landscapes and unforgettable chase scenes have secured its place as one of the most influential adventure novels ever written.

This authorised edition includes an introduction by Stuart Kelly and is published with the approval of the John Buchan Society.
