About the Ebook
Wild History invites readers to explore Scotland’s hidden past — the ruins, remnants and forgotten structures that lie scattered across its most remote landscapes. From lonely beaches and eerie forests to windswept hills and abandoned industrial sites, James Crawford reveals the stories behind the places where history has been reclaimed by nature.
These are the traces that rarely appear on maps, that lack plaques or explanations, and yet speak powerfully of the people who built, lived in and ultimately left them behind. Crawford guides readers through prehistoric forts, ancient burial sites, deserted bothies, derelict boathouses and the fading remains of once‑vital industries.
Named Waterstones Scottish Book of the Month for April 2025 and recognised by multiple major awards, Wild History blends travel writing, archaeology, storytelling and landscape observation into a vivid portrait of Scotland’s lost places.
